The School for The Work

The School is for people who are tired of their suffering, people who really want to know the truth and are ready for peace on earth.

It is 9 days of transformation. And at the end you awaken to a joy-filled life.

April 13 - 22
The School for The Work with Byron Katie
Los Angeles, CA

Come experience nine mind-and heart-opening days with Katie, and transform your life forever.

The School for The Work is unlike any other school on earth. Instead of focusing on learning, you will be unlearning the fearful stories you have innocently attached to. Being free doesn’t come from learning new concepts. It is who you already are once your limiting beliefs have been met with understanding. Who would you be without your stressful stories? At The School for The Work with Byron Katie, you can begin to find out.

Dear Katie,
In the weeks since completing the School for The Work in L.A., I have discovered that the blessings of those nine days have continued in the most unexpected ways. I continue to do The Work regularly, and I find that I am more honest than I have ever been in my life. It is an honesty that comes in response to a voice that asks, "Is it true?" And in a flash, I am able to go in and know the truth.

During the School, as part of one exercise, I decided to give away the precious school photographs of my beloved sons when they were five and seven. Much of the story I carried around with me during the School—and indeed during much of my life for the past thirteen years—was about the death of my older son, Peter. The process of giving away those photos was very powerful for me, both in the difficulty of relinquishing and in the blessing of letting go. The full impact of that blessing, however, did not occur until I came home.

When I told my son Matt about the experience of giving away the photographs, he was visibly touched. "Oh, Mom," he said, "it must have been especially hard for you to give Pete's picture away. You always have me around, but with Pete's, well, he's not here for you to see. You can always see me." And he made a funny face.

At that moment I heard, "Is it true it was harder to give away Peter's picture?" And the answer was a resounding "No!" And I spoke this truth to Matt. "No, darling, actually that's not true. It was just as difficult for me to give away your picture. Your picture is just as precious to me as Pete's." And in that moment of recognition and tears when my son whispered "Thank you," the story of my suffering and loss was revealed as the great separator. That story has kept me separate from so many, including myself, and especially from the love who sat before me, beloved Matt. Something very deep dissolved between my son and me that evening, and it has not returned.

I thank you, Katie, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing this amazing work and for your boundless generosity revealed every day in Los Angeles.

Much, much love,
Marcia

"People said that they wanted a school, so I began one. I put the School exercises together. In a sense they were already written, because I had lived them all. They were all based on my experiences of the first two years after 1986 and were designed to bring people directly into those experiences and into a new awareness, and it works. The first School took place in Barstow in 1988. We began, and I revised the exercises and wrote new ones as we went along. I still do this today. My School is a living experience, moment by moment.

Dear Katie,

Just attended the March 2004 School at Pala Mesa. I have never been so deeply and positively affected in my life. Not only was the curriculum the most advanced course in emotional honesty and maturity that I have ever encountered, but the timing, content, and sequence of all exercises were planned with such wisdom and safety that my courage to experience the teachings beyond the theoretical was truly amazing. And as for you, you are a gift to this planet beyond measure. You are a teacher and healer of the highest caliber and integrity. I will follow your example by doing my best to end my internal war.

Gratefully and with love,
Michael L.

"In the School, I take people through every nightmare I ever experienced. (No nightmare is foreign; we carry them all inside us.) I show people how to walk themselves through their fears, until they are confident that they have the key to the end of their own suffering alive within them. If they have a problem, real or imagined (all problems are imagined), we work with it. I take them into the depths of hell and out again. We travel. The School is for people who are tired of their suffering, people who really want to know the truth and are ready for peace on earth. All are welcome, and I love that my staff is entirely made up of earlier participants in the School.

"I attended the School for The Work in Brussels (08/03) and I would like you to know that this was the best school or seminar or workshop I've ever attended in my whole life. The content, the organization, the staff, and everything I encountered was not less than perfect. I'm sharing this experience with everybody who wants to know about it. The School for The Work is an immeasurable gift for the world."

— Peter A.

"On the first evening, I sometimes ask the participants what they want to take home from the School. They say things like 'I want peace of mind' or 'I want to be free' or 'I want to be a more loving person' or 'I want to be less anxious about my problems' or 'I want to be less self-absorbed' or 'I want to live without fear' or 'I want to be happy, whether I have a lover or not.' By the end of the School, they all say that they have found a way to end their suffering and that they got even more than what they originally wanted. People come out so changed that their families are entirely grateful and often astounded. The Work has awakened within every participant who comes with an open mind, and there is nothing that they can do to shut it down. Once the four questions are alive inside you, your mind becomes clear, and therefore the world you project becomes clear. This is more radical than anyone can possibly imagine." - Katie

"I've been to many workshops and retreats in my life, and I've never been to anything so masterfully designed, diverse, and profound as the adventure of this course. It is stunning and beyond belief. As a result, I am clearer, cleaner and wiser at living my life. I find it virtually impossible to be a victim anymore, and my skill in facilitating The Work has become razor-sharp. I originally thought the course was expensive, and I see it now as priceless. This kind of love can't be bought."

— M.O., Los Angeles, CA, USA

Through individual and group sessions, and field trips, Katie and a staff committed to your personal freedom will guide you on an intense journey through your own mind, allowing you to:

• radically improve all your relationships.
• see that the world, once understood, is a safe and loving place to be.
• learn how to love your body just as it is
• experience that reality is always kinder than your story about it.
• understand, without fear, your mind and thoughts.
• listen and learn to communicate with others clearly and effectively.
• learn how to expertly facilitate yourself and others with The Work.

"The process of the School totally blew me away. I had been doing The Work for five years, but to be led masterfully on an internal process to take a look at my primal unconscious beliefs has shaken me to the core. It stopped my mind cold. Meditating in an ashram in India for a year couldn't do what the School has done for me. Freedom from me."

— M.B., Massachussetts

Everything you could need at the School is provided once you arrive. With Katie's loving guidance, you'll learn how to expertly use the four questions and turnaround for yourself and how to efficiently facilitate others. A broad curriculum safely takes you into the parts of yourself that have not yet been met with understanding. Bring nothing more than a deep desire to know the truth, and leave with what could be the most extraordinary experience of your life.

"Wow! In one word—shocking! I thought that I knew something. Thank God I don't need to know anymore. What peace."

— D.B., New York

Past participants report that the effects of the School continue to deepen and expand long afterward, and that they experience more peace and clarity in all areas of their lives. Relationship struggles dissolve, problems become toys to play with, and work becomes an opportunity realize freedom.

Benefits of Using The Work in Your Profession

"My boss doesn't listen." "There's too much to do." "My employees are inefficient." "This job is killing me." "My children need me at home." "I hate my job." Directly investigating stressful beliefs has countless benefits both professionally and personally: improved relationships at home and at work, a reduction in reactivity of all kinds, increased equanimity in the face of change, and access to an internal source of clarity, happiness and fulfillment.

"The time and the money involved seemed like a lot to me—I could go on vacation instead. But something in me said to go, and by the end I had to laugh—it WAS a vacation. It literally vacated my mind. And instead of going home with souvenirs and a tan, I went home lighter, so much lighter, and it hasn’t gone away. It just gets better. I learned how to have a happy life! Amazing."

— A.B., California

At the School for The Work and weekend intensives, you will learn to:

  • identify deeply held core beliefs, prejudices, judgments and expectations which have a negative impact on professional relationships.
  • facilitate yourself and others in unraveling these beliefs through written and verbal exercises and observation of skilled facilitators doing The Work.
  • develop more effective communication skills, so that you can listen clearly, give direct feedback, and say "no" with clarity and love.

"What I loved most about the School is my life after the School. The absence of my constant companion of uneasiness is so sweet. I feel really comfortable being me now; I actually like being with myself. I don't know if it is because of the School, and maybe it is coincidence, but now, only six months later, I am newly engaged to the most amazing man, I have moved to a wonderful home in a beautiful town, and my job gets better and better."

— S.M., Arizona

Improve your relationships at work...and your performance. The Work helps you to create more openness and clarity in your interactions with colleagues, clients, and supervisors so that you are more available, fluid, and efficient at work. With practice of self-inquiry, you become:

  • a better listener and a clear, authentic communicator.
  • aware of the connection between physical and mental well-being.
  • better at managing your personal stresses so you are more present and peaceful on the job
  • able to respond more quickly and sensibly to stressful situations at work
  • adaptable and creative in the face of change

"The School for me is hard to describe, but the results are not. Now I feel more joyful, and I look at people without stories and junk to charge the energy between us. The world seems more manageable and loving. I am so thankful I had this experience with Byron Katie—she is awesome!"

— M.B.R., North Carolina

"The Work is what I'd been wishing for on a life's worth of birthday candles. Since I returned from the School, I love my partner even more. She's so fine. She's funnier than I thought she was. And I'll talk to anybody now. I answer the phone on the first ring with impunity. Strangers on the street make me laugh. After 25 years of rolling my own non-filter cigarettes, I don't smoke, and I like it. I wink, I walk, I dance, and this is worth remarking, because before The Work I had named the face of the world Medusa and suffered myself into stoic stone. At the School I let myself quit doing that. I'm out from under the chisel. And I really like it."

— G.M., Texas

“Byron Katie’s Work is a great blessing for our planet. The root cause of suffering is identification with our thoughts, the ‘stories’ that are continuously running through our minds. The Work acts like a razor-sharp sword that cuts through that illusion and enables you to know for yourself the timeless essence of your being.
Joy, peace, and love emanate from it as your natural state.”

She has been enormously

I love this very wise woman.”

In a letter from Helsinki, Finland, J.V. writes:
"...two groundbreaking Stanford University pain syndrome experts consider Byron Katie's approach the best form of Cognitive Therapy. In the new revised 5th Edition of A Headache in the Pelvis (pp. 326–330), which came out in May 2008, Stanford psychologist David Wise, Ph.D., and neurologist Rodney Anderson, M.D., refer to Albert Ellis' Rational-Emotive Therapy and Aaron Beck's Cognitive Therapy and then write (in their italics)
: 'The best form of Cognitive Therapy, in our opinion, is offered in The Work of Byron Katie, who provides an approach to disarming catastrophic thinking by means of a process that one can do oneself. This is the approach that we recommend.' They then describe the procedure, adding: 'Our description of this process is rarely sufficient to become proficient at it. We discuss this method in our monthly 6-day clinics. Information specifically about this cognitive therapy work can be found at www.thework.com and in the books of Byron Katie." Wise and Anderson are practical, in-the-trenches therapists who work daily with severe pelvic pain and other chronic syndromes. They recommended Byron Katie's method already in the 4th edition of the book
(pp. 298–301).'

“Byron Katie's teachings

are pure wisdom.
Her Work shows us
the way to inner peace,

I have rarely seen anyone
—spiritual teachers included— embody wisdom as powerfully as Katie in her passionate embrace of each and every moment.”

“Good Lord! Where did Byron Katie come from? She’s the real McCoy. Her Work is amazingly effective—a simple, straightforward antidote to the suffering we unnecessarily create for ourselves. She asks us to believe nothing, but provides a surprisingly effective and simple way to cut through the tangle of delusions we wrap ourselves in.”
David Chadwick

“Suppose you could find a simple way to embrace your life with joy, stop arguing with reality, and achieve serenity in the midst of chaos. That is what Loving What Is offers. It is no less than a revolutionary way to live your life. The question is: are we brave enough to accept it?”
