Carol Skolnick
Diagnosed with clinical depression in my early 20s, I was told I'd need psychotherapy and medication for the rest of my life. I couldn't appreciate my friends, or celebrate my considerable successes; to my mind, I was unlovable, and a failure. At 40, my immune system crashed, and shortly after, so did my business. My decades-long quest to escape suffering through different teachers, modalities, romantic relationships, diets, and careers had left me exhausted and disillusioned. I wanted out.
In 2001, I heard that there was another human being who, at my age—43—had found a way out of deep depression by questioning the beliefs that troubled her. It sounded a bit simplistic, but I figured I had nothing to lose; so I went to see Byron Katie. With my very first experience of The Work, my heart and mind began to open as the inquiry stopped cold my tendency to justify, defend, and bat away anything that didn't support my sad story. With continued, regular practice of this transformative process, self-destructive behaviors, resentments and blame, self-hatred, and habitually depressing thoughts began to fall away. I found forgiveness for my family, my exes, even for my worst enemy—myself—as I realized how my "difficult" childhood, "disgusting" body, "failed" careers, "abusive" relationships, "stupid" mistakes, and "hard" life turned out to be my perfect teachers and most holy path. My health improved along with my outlook. After one year of practicing inquiry, I left therapy, with my psychologist's blessings. Today I want in, 100%. There is no fear that cannot be met with understanding, no resentment I haven't been able to heal, no horror story of self-hatred more powerful than the love story on the other side of The Work's four questions and turnaround. I know what it's like to live with crippling self-doubt, health and appearance issues, phobias, grief, and caring for a mentally ill/aging parent.I'm intimate with issues of childhood sexual abuse, dysfunctional relationships, creative blocks, career burnout, spiritual crises, financial fears, and resistance to the changes of midlife. If you are afraid, furious, confused, or despairing—or if you are simply ready to get real with yourself—I will walk through the fire with you.
