Anil Coumar
After medical school, I entered the world of mental health
"by accident" as a psychiatry resident in India in 1984, because
I thought it would be an easy discipline with fewer on-calls. In London,
I started my psychoanalytic training and personal analysis. I also trained
in Transactional Analysis psychotherapy and received a master's degree
in psychology in the U.S.
I
was introduced to The Work much later in my career as a psychotherapist
and found it both personally and professionally more powerful than all
the other therapeutic and counseling modalities in which I had trained.
My preference as a psychotherapist is to teach the client to fish rather
than provide them with fish, and The Work does just that. It does not
drain me as a facilitator, and many times when I facilitate the client,
I am also doing my own Work. The Work is easy to teach and to learn. It
reduces the clients' dependency on the provider and gives them a tool
they can use for the rest of their lives. It has given me a much needed
lifeline out of stress in my daily life, and I would like to offer it
to you as a facilitator.
When we look at descriptions for all the mental illnesses listed in the
DSM-IV (the diagnostic manual for mental illnesses), it becomes quickly
apparent that the common theme linking all the diagnoses is the patients'
attachment to their thinking. I have yet to come across a mental illness
where questioning closely-held concepts is not useful for the patients'
recovery.
Currently I am Director of Hall Health Mental Health Clinic at University
of Washington in Seattle where I see patients in addition to my administrative
duties. I use The Work with most of my patients at the clinic and in my
private practice in Seattle. I am also very interested in developing a
clinical treatment manual and in doing some research using The Work among
people with established mental health diagnoses. I am also exploring ways
to make this powerful tool available to university students. If you want
to schedule a session, please give me a call or email me.
